AURORA ARCHIVI STORCI ca. 1960 Parts Manufactured in 1996

Model:

Aurora Archivi Storici reprise of the 88P made up of original 1960 parts
Grade:
Excellent + to Near Mint
Nib Width:
Smooth fine
Length Capped:
5 5/16"
Comments:
This piston filler Aurora was manufactured in 1996 using 88P parts found in Aurora's warehouse.  Only a limited number were made, since there were just a few parts from which to fabricate.  The pen looks just like the last version of the famous 88 that proved to be Italy's most popular pen line from 1946 through the early 1960's.  The pen comes in a nice leatherette hard case and includes the certificate of authenticity from Aurora.  The pen has been filled once or twice and it looks brand new.
Price:
$155

AURORA 88 GOLD FILLED CAP ca. 1946-1953

Model:
Aurora 88  Gold Filled cap Serial #1729283
Grade:
Excellent +
Nib Width:
Smooth Medium semi flex
Length Capped:
5 7/16"
Comments:
Modeled after the Parker 51, the Aurora 88 became the best selling fountain pen in Italy after its introduction in 1946.  The pen features a black celluloid body, with ebonite hood and turning knob.  The pen is a piston filler that has been restored and will be guaranteed for one year from time of purchase.  Unlike many metal capped pens, this one does not feature any dents or dings.  After trying out one of these at a recent pen show, I was blown away by the superb writing characteristics of these wonderful pens.  I now use one on a daily basis.  This pen has a very soft nib that has some flex and allows for a wet, varied line.  Although completely unobjective, I consider this "the better 51."  I love the large transparent window, allowing one to monitor the ink level in the pen--a major short-coming of the Parker 51.  After becoming familiar with these 88's, I can understand why this was the most successful Italian fountain pen ever. By 1953, Aurora had sold 1 million of them.  If you are looking for a great writer with a streamline look, you will like this Aurora 88.

AURORA 88 NIKARGENTA CAP ca. 1946

Model:
Aurora 88 Nikargenta cap Serial #10717771
Grade:
Excellent to Excellent +
Nib Width:
Smooth Medium semi flex
Length Capped:
5 7/16"
Comments:
This is the same style pen as above, but with the earlier and harder to find Nikargenta cap.  The Nikargenta alloy was patented by Aurora and was a mix of nickel and silver, which avoided some of the problems of both a sterling silver or a nickel plated cap.  It is stamped "Nikargenta" on the cap lip edge.  The Company abandoned this cap fairly early in the production run, as it was too expensive to fabricate, switching to the more common Gold Filled version.  The cap on this pen does show some wear, but no dings or dents.  The writing characteristics are similar to the pen above, having perhaps a bit wetter line, with nice variation.  Another superb pen.

AURORA 88P NOS ca. 1958

Model:
Aurora 88 P new old stock (NOS)  (No serial number on this one.) Two others available as well.
Grade:
Near Mint to Mint
Nib Width:
Ultra Smooth Fine
Length Capped:
5 5/16"
Comments:
The Aurora 88 P was introduced in 1958 and represented an evolution of this most successful Italian pen.  The pen was made a bit thinner and the cap and clip designs were more contemporary, than the rounded look of the earlier 88.  The pen retains its overall look with the large transparent window.  The turning knob was made out of celluloid rather than black hard rubber.  However, the warm feel of the gripping area was maintained by sticking with the ebonite shell.  The nibs on these later 88Ps no longer have the flex characteristics of the earlier pens, but are absolutely a dream to write with and the nibs are uniformly smooth and fairly wet writers. The nib size is marked on the hood in a very small letter
Price:
NOS $160 SOLD  Other two both in excellent + condition and still available: 1) medium nib # 31114424 @ $125  SOLD  2) , one with a fine nib # 3023327 @ $125 SOLD All guaranteed for one year after purchase.  SOLD BUT MORE COMING IN AUGUST - EMAIL ME IF YOU WANT ONE OF THESE SUPERB PENS!

CENTURY OVERSIZE ca. 1927

Model:
Century Oversize Flat-top "Durapoint" in mottled hard rubber.
Grade:
Excellent to Excellent +
Nib Width:
Smooth Medium semi flex, marked "Century Durapoint"
Length Capped:
5 1/2"
Comments:
Century was a manufacturer in Whitewater Wisconsin and made very high quality pens, competing with Parker and Sheaffer for a limited time.  Century pens are quite scarce.  This pen is made of absolutely stunning mottled red hard rubber, similar to English Mabie Todd pens of the same era.  The cap is set off with a bakalite derby.  The pen is marked "Century Durapoint" on the barrel.  There is no brassing on the clip.  The lever has some minor pitting and this kept the pen from being graded a solid Excellent + to near mint.

$275  SOLD

TITANIA NOS ca. late 1940's

Model:
Titania  New Old Stock
Grade:
Near Mint to Mint
Nib Width:
Smooth 14K Fine semi flex marked "Titania Osmo 585 3"
Length Capped:
5 3/8"
Comments:
This Italian pen was manufactured by a Settimo Torinese company of the same name established in the early 1930's by Giorgio Fornello.  The firm remained in business until the late 1940's.  Titania products had their greatest success after the War, but only for a short period.  (See "La Soria della Stilografica in Italia 1900-1950" by DiLetizia Jacopini.)  This new old stock pen has never seen ink.  It is a piston filler whose cork washer had deteriorated.  I replaced it with a rubber washer and the pen functions perfectly.  The pictures simply do not do justice to this pen, as the celluloid is similar to Montblanc's Platinum, a mix of shades of gray striated material.  There is a bit of tarnish on the bottom of the cap band, otherwise one could not tell that this pen was manufactured 60 years ago.  Overall, the pen is reminiscent of a slender Sheaffer Balance, but its much nicer than any of those Sheaffer models.

GOLD BOND STONITE with 14k CAP BANDS ca. late 1930's

Model:
Gold Bond Stonite late 1920's
Grade:
Excellent + to Near Mint
Nib Width:
Smooth Medium-Fine , marked "Warranted 8 14K No. 3 Made in USA"
Length Capped:
4 7/16"
Comments:
This is a very nice example of a Gold Bond "Stonite," and the barrel is so marked.  The celluloid reminds one of Parker Sea Mist or Sheaffer Marine Green, but it is brighter with more contrast.  Interestingly, the pen's two cap bands are stamped 14k, quite unusual.  There is a sticker on the bottom of the barrel indicating that the nib is "Medium."  Although it looks closer to a fine than a medium width.  This is a stubby pen with a shortish length, but standard outside cap diameter of 1/2."

MABIE TODD SWAN ca. 1949

Model:

Mabie Todd Swan Model 4661 Twist Filler English made
Grade:
Excellent
Nib Width:
Huge Ultra Smooth Medium flexible, marked "Swan 14ct 6 Mabie Todd" Very wet writer with great line variation
Length Capped:
5 1/2"
Comments:
While smaller versions of this torpedo shaped model are fairly common, this oversize scarce #6 sports a fantastic large nib (as big if not bigger than a Parker Sr. Duofold) that is wonderfully flexible. Minor brassing on the clip ball, none elsewhere.  There is the smallest amount of even fading on the cap and barrel, only noticable where the cap covers the barrel.  Strong imprint, with the famous "Swan" clearly shown.
Price:
WAS $195 NOW $180  SOLD

MOORE 94A "ART DECO" ca. late 1930's - early 1940's

Model:

Moore 94A in Brown striated celluloid
Grade:
Excellent
Nib Width:
Smooth fine semi-flex, marked "Moore Life Maniflex 14k."
Length Capped:
5 1/16"
Comments:
This Moore reflects art deco themes in the clip and nib markings.  The celluloid reminds one of that used by Sheaffer, but the Moore celluloid seems a bit more interesting.  The pen barrel imprint is good and is marked "Moore Pen Co. Boston 94A Mass.  A seldom seen model that is worthy of more attention.

$100  SOLD

PELIKAN 400NN TORTOISE ca. 1956-65

Excellent
Nib Width:
Extra smooth Semi-flexible very responsive Extra Fine, and Medium nibs, marked "Pelikan 585 14 C"
Length Capped:
4 7/8"
Comments:
Pelikans of this era are known as great writers and this pen is no exception.  Rich Propas calls them the "BMW" of fountain pens.  These piston fill pens are terrific writers and will make someone very happy!  These Tortoise 400NN's are getting very difficult to find.  Very minor edge brassing on the clip and clip holder.  We have a very limited number available.

MABIE TODD ENGLISH SWAN TWIST FILLER ca. 1933-38

Model:

Mabie Todd English "Leverless Pen" ca. 1933-38
Grade:
Excellent to Excellent +
Nib Width:
Smooth Broad semi-flex marked "Swan 2 14ct Mabie Todd Co."
Length Capped:
5 5/16"
Comments:
This Mabie Todd Swan is twist filler, that fills by turning the ebonite blind cap which is attached to a bar in the barrel which collapses the sac to create a vacuum.  The barrel is marked "Swan Leverless Pen Mabie Todd & Co. Ltd Made in England," and is a very strong imprint.  The bottom of the barrel is marked "L249/47."  The Swan "Leverless" pen was patented in 1933, and the mechanism survived through the 1940's.  This is a beautiful example with a celluloid color that I have never seen used by any other manufacturer.  Its simply stunning.  The pen is pictured on page 189 of "The Chronicle of the Fountain Pen," by Martins, Leite, and Gagean.  If you like Mabie Todd, than this is the pen for you.  Just a tad of brassing on the clip ball and on the top cap band, none elsewhere.
Price:
$185  SOLD

CARTERS INX ca. 1932-37

Model:

Carters INX in scarce "Lizard" celluloid ca, 1932-37
Grade:
Excellent + to Near Mint
Nib Width:
Smooth fine flex, marked "Carters INX Pen 14k."
Length Capped:
5 1/8"
Comments:
This was Carters "2nd generation" streamline pen, that featured a straight clip rather than the ball clip curved unit used on earlier versions.  We suspect the design change may have had to do with reducing fabrication costs.  Carters manufactured pens for just a short time, from approximately 1926 through 1937, so they are not commonly found.  This pen would have to fall at the truly scarce end of the spectrum.  While most of the streamline Carters were made of "Peartex" mottled celluloid, this pen features a wonderful and highly desirable "Lizard" pattern in green.  In all the years of collecting, we've seen few Carters, and have never seen this color on a Carters.  The pen is as close to Near Mint as one can get, with no real signs of wear.  We hesitate to call this rare, but that might be the right word for this wonderful pen.
Price:
$435  SOLD
